The Kind of Fitness That Matters Most

Table of Contents

As I get older, and as the people I love get older too, I realize more and more how important it is to keep moving.

Not just moving when life is easy. Not just moving when you feel motivated. Not just moving when you already feel strong.

Moving because your body needs it. Moving because your future self is counting on it. Moving because strength, balance, endurance, and confidence do not just magically stay with us as we age. We have to keep giving our body a reason to hold onto them.

Trust me when I say this. As I watch my parents, aunts, and uncles age, I am seeing in real time the difference between the ones who kept moving and the ones who did not.

And the difference is not small.

It is alarming. It is astounding. It is honestly hard to ignore.

My mom is 86 years old and she is a twin. Two people, same age, same beginning, same family. And yet their lives look completely different now.

Of course, we cannot control everything about aging, health, or circumstance, but we can control whether we keep giving our body a reason to stay strong.

One needs a walker and help with showers and daily living. The other is still completely independent.

My mom is home. She moves. She takes care of herself. She is happy. She still has freedom in her day to day life.

And as one of five daughters, I can tell you that my sisters and I are thankful every single day that our parents made movement and exercise part of their lives.

Because now it is paying off.

This is the part people do not always think about when they talk about fitness. It is not just about looking a certain way, losing weight, lifting heavy, or finishing a workout.

It is about getting off the floor. Carrying your groceries. Walking without fear. Taking a shower by yourself. Staying in your home. Keeping your independence as long as possible.

That is the kind of fitness that matters.

For those of you who are younger and reading this, I know it may feel like this stage of life is a lifetime away.

But trust me, it is not as far away as you think.

The habits you are building now matter. So keep showing up. Keep having fun. Keep lifting, walking, running, sweating, laughing, and doing the things that make your body stronger.

Make movement part of your life now – not because you are afraid of getting older, but because you want to enjoy your life as fully as possible for as long as possible.

You do not have to think about being 86 every day.

But one day, your 86 year old self may be very thankful that you started now.

At Chaka, we have fitness for every starting point, and that is why this matters so much to me.

You do not need to be in shape before you walk through our doors. You do not need to know the movements, lift heavy, run fast, or keep up with anyone else. Our job is to meet you where you are, guide you, and help you build from there.

For one person, fitness may look like walking instead of running. For another, it may look like sitting down to a box instead of squatting below parallel. For someone else, it may be using lighter weights while they learn and build confidence.

It all counts.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to keep moving, keep showing up, and keep giving your body a reason to stay strong.

Because one day, your future self may be very thankful that you started now.
