You Do Not Need to Be Fit to Start

Table of Contents

I am always on the hunt for a blog topic. Some topics speak to me and some do not. Sometimes a topic keeps popping up over and over again until I finally concede to the hints the universe is giving me and write something down. Over the last two weeks, this one has been front and center.

One of the top reasons people give for not starting their fitness journey is that they do not feel fit enough yet. I hear things like, “I’m not fit enough to start,” or “I need to get in shape before I try CrossFit,” or “I’ll come in once I lose a little weight,” or “I need to build up my endurance first.” And I say this with love, but also with honesty: that is just another excuse you are telling yourself to stay in the exact same spot you are in right now.

You do not need to be in shape before you start. That is literally why places like Chaka CrossFit exist.

Chaka CrossFit is more than just a name on the building. We are more than barbells, burpees, and people sweating on the floor. We are a place designed for real people. Any shape. Any size. Any age. Any fitness level. You do not have to walk in here knowing what you are doing. You do not have to know how to lift a barbell. You do not have to be able to run a mile. You do not have to keep up with the person next to you. You just have to be willing to start.

Our coaches are professionals who have a passion for fitness and helping people. They are also pretty darn awesome humans who know their stuff. That matters because walking into a gym can feel intimidating, especially if you already feel like you are behind. But when you walk through our doors, you are not thrown into the deep end and told to figure it out. You are coached. You are guided. You are given options. You are taught how to move safely.

Most importantly, you are met where you are. Not where you think you “should” be. Not where you were 10 or 20 years ago. Not where your friend is. Not where the person beside you is. You are met where you are today, and that is your starting point.

Everyone has a starting point. Even the people who look fit now had a first day. They had movements they did not understand. They had weights they could not lift. They had workouts that made them question every life decision that brought them there. The difference is that they started.

At Chaka, we believe fitness should be scalable. That means the workout can be adjusted to fit the person in front of us. If something is too heavy, we make it lighter. If something is too advanced, we modify it. If running is not the right option, we find another option. If you need to move slower, you move slower. Scaling is not failing. Scaling is smart training.

The goal is not to crush you on day one. The goal is to help you build confidence, strength, endurance, and consistency over time. Because fitness is not one magical workout. It is showing up again and again. It is learning what your body can do. It is realizing you are stronger than you thought. It is finding people who notice when you are not there. It is having coaches who care enough to help you do it the right way.

You just need a safe place to begin, coaches who care, and a community that wants you to come back.

That is what we do at Chaka.

So if you have been waiting until you feel ready, this is your reminder: you do not need to be ready. You just need to start.

CrossFit vs. Bootcamp: What’s the Difference?

I get a lot of people who tell me they like bootcamp-style workouts. And I get it. They like the “go, go, go” feeling. They like moving for an extended period of time, getting their heart rate up, and walking out feeling like they got a good sweat. And honestly,

What are Hybrid Athletes?

“Hybrid athlete.” That is the new buzz word in the fitness world right now. The new trendy label. It is kind of cute, honestly. It sounds polished and impressive. Like, “Hello, yes, I am a Hybrid Athlete.” Very official. Very marketable. Very social media friendly. And in some ways, I
