The Advice I Wish I Had When I Started CrossFit

Table of Contents

I know this is not the first time I have said it, but CrossFit is a challenge.

It is.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I’ll repeat myself anyway.

I try not to use the word “hard” too often because I never want that word to scare someone away before they even give it a chance. But let’s be honest. Life is hard sometimes, too. It has ups and downs, unexpected turns, and plenty of surprises waiting around every corner.

I have had my fair share.

In life. In fitness. In both.

When I think back to when I first started CrossFit, there is one thing I really wish someone had told me. It is the same advice we now give people when they begin their journey at Chaka.

Be patient. Be safe. Stay light. Reduce your workload.

That matters.

Especially during the first couple of months, there is no reason to rush. You do not need to keep up with the person beside you, and you do not need to prove how much you can do.

Your job is simpler than that.

Learn the movements. Pay attention to your body. Build your strength and endurance slowly, one workout at a time.

CrossFit asks your body to do things it may not be used to doing, and it takes time to understand how your body responds to that kind of training. You may be sore. Some movements may feel awkward. One day you may feel strong, and the next day everything may feel harder than it should.

That is normal.

It does not mean you are doing something wrong. It means you are learning.

Progress does not come from trying to do everything all at once. It comes from showing up consistently, making smart choices, and giving your body the time it needs to adjust.

Go lighter than you think you need to.

Cut the reps.

Take an extra break.

Modify the movement.

Listen to your coach.

There will be plenty of time to add weight, move faster, and take on more work. You are not missing out by starting slowly. You are building the foundation that will allow you to keep going.

That is the real goal.

The goal is not to survive your first few months of CrossFit. The goal is to build a strong enough foundation that you can continue doing it for years.

And trust me when I say this… even taking it easy at CrossFit is still one heck of a workout.

That is one of the things I love most about it. CrossFit can meet you where you are, challenge you in a way that makes sense for you, and help prepare you for just about anything life decides to throw your way.

So, if you are thinking about trying us out, come in.

If you are on the fence, take the step.

If something is holding you back, do not let it make the decision for you.

Give it a try.

You do not have to know what you are doing. You do not have to be in shape first. You do not have to prove anything.

You are in good hands.

The Goal Starts When You Decide It Matters

Some goals are easy and quick to achieve. Others take time, patience, consistency, and a whole lot of faith. In the fitness world, it is easy to look at someone doing something skill-related like double unders, pull-ups, toes-to-bar, or even a muscle-up and think, “I’ll never be able to do

Movement Standards Matter

I just got back from a competition that some of our athletes competed in, and I always leave events like that with the same thought: we really do train differently. Not because we are trying to be fancy. Not because we think every rep has to look perfect. And definitely

CrossFit vs. Bootcamp: What’s the Difference?

I get a lot of people who tell me they like bootcamp-style workouts. And I get it. They like the “go, go, go” feeling. They like moving for an extended period of time, getting their heart rate up, and walking out feeling like they got a good sweat. And honestly,

You Do Not Need to Be Fit to Start

I am always on the hunt for a blog topic. Some topics speak to me and some do not. Sometimes a topic keeps popping up over and over again until I finally concede to the hints the universe is giving me and write something down. Over the last two weeks,

The Kind of Fitness That Matters Most

As I get older, and as the people I love get older too, I realize more and more how important it is to keep moving. Not just moving when life is easy. Not just moving when you feel motivated. Not just moving when you already feel strong. Moving because your
