Every Gym Has a Personality

Table of Contents

I’ve been around gyms long enough to realize something: gyms have personalities.

You can walk into two gyms that have almost the exact same equipment, offer somewhat similar workouts, and charge similarly. They can feel completely different.

And I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Some gyms are competitive. You walk in and immediately feel the energy. People are chasing numbers, comparing scores, training for competitions, and looking for the next challenge.

Some gyms are very social. People come to work out, but they also come because those are their people. They want to laugh, catch up, and probably hang around longer than they need to after class.

Some gyms are serious and structured. You come in, do the work, get coached, and go home.

Some are built around beginners. Some attract experienced athletes. Some are young. Some are older. Some are loud. Some are quieter.

None of those is necessarily better than the other.

The question is: What kind of gym fits you?

I think sometimes people choose a gym based on the workout, the price or how close it is to their house. Those things obviously matter. But I think the personality of the gym matters just as much.

Do you feel comfortable walking through the door? Do the coaches know you? Can you be competitive if you want to be without feeling like you have to be? Can you modify a workout without feeling like you’re doing something wrong?

Can you be 25 and training for a HYROX race while someone next to you is 60 and training to stay strong enough to do everything they want to do outside the gym?

That’s probably the personality we’ve developed at Chaka.

We’re not really one thing.

We have people who want to compete. We have people who couldn’t care less about their score. We have people who love lifting heavy. We have people who love endurance. We have people who are brand new, people who have been doing this for years, and people whose biggest accomplishment might simply be doing something today that they couldn’t do six months ago.

And I like that.

I don’t think every gym should have the same personality. Actually, I think it would be pretty boring if they did.

The important part is finding the place where you feel like you belong and where the personality of the gym helps you become the person you walked through the door hoping to become.

Movement Standards Matter

I just got back from a competition that some of our athletes competed in, and I always leave events like that with the same thought: we really do train differently. Not because we are trying to be fancy. Not because we think every rep has to look perfect. And definitely

CrossFit vs. Bootcamp: What’s the Difference?

I get a lot of people who tell me they like bootcamp-style workouts. And I get it. They like the “go, go, go” feeling. They like moving for an extended period of time, getting their heart rate up, and walking out feeling like they got a good sweat. And honestly,

You Do Not Need to Be Fit to Start

As I get older, and as the people I love get older too, I realize more and more how important it is to keep moving. Not just moving when life is easy. Not just moving when you feel motivated. Not just moving when you already feel strong. Moving because your

Sometimes We Need Something to Train For

I train because I want to be healthy for a long time. I want to be strong. I want to be capable. I want to be independent. I want to carry my groceries, move things I probably should have asked for help with, get off the floor without making dramatic

What are Hybrid Athletes?

“Hybrid athlete.” That is the new buzz word in the fitness world right now. The new trendy label. It is kind of cute, honestly. It sounds polished and impressive. Like, “Hello, yes, I am a Hybrid Athlete.” Very official. Very marketable. Very social media friendly. And in some ways, I
