Sometimes We Need Something to Train For

Table of Contents

I train because I want to be healthy for a long time. I want to be strong. I want to be capable. I want to be independent. I want to carry my groceries, move things I probably should have asked for help with, get off the floor without making dramatic sound effects, and live my life without feeling like my body is constantly arguing with me.

That is the real reason.

Health.
Longevity.
Independence.
Being able to do life.

But…I also love having something to train for.

A race. A competition. A HYROX. A DEKA. Or some random event I signed up for when I was feeling really confident and then later thought, “Why do I do this to myself?” or “This was a terrible idea!”

There is something powerful about putting something on the calendar. It gives your training direction. It gives the hard days a purpose. It gives you a reason to show up when you would rather not. Then event day comes. The alarm goes off way too early. You are packing snacks, shoes, extra socks, and enough clothes to prepare for every possible weather scenario. You get nervous. You question your choices. You show up anyway.

And then somehow, after it is over, you start thinking about the next thing.

That is how it gets you. But not every season of training needs a race, competition, or big event attached to it.

Sometimes the thing you are training for is your health. Sometimes you are training so your future self has more options. Sometimes you are training so you can keep moving, lifting, laughing, traveling, playing, carrying, climbing, and saying yes to life.

At Chaka, we love events. We love seeing people put themselves out there, try hard things, and realize they are capable of more than they thought.

But we also believe everyday life is worth training for.

You do not need a finish line to have a reason.
You do not need a medal to prove your fitness matters.
You do not need to be signed up for something to take your health seriously.

So yes, sign up for the race. Try the event. Do the thing that makes you nervous enough to wonder why you agreed to it.

But when there is nothing on the calendar, train anyway.

Train for your heart.
Train for your bones.
Train for your muscles.
Train for your mind.
Train for the version of you who still wants to be strong and independent years from now.

Because sometimes we need something to train for and sometimes that something is simply the rest of our life.

“Hybrid athlete.” That is the new buzz word in the fitness world right now. The new trendy label. It is kind of cute, honestly. It sounds polished and impressive. Like, “Hello, yes, I am a Hybrid Athlete.” Very official. Very marketable. Very social media friendly. And in some ways, I
