What Fall Training Does For Your Winter

Table of Contents

As beautiful as fall is, I always feel like it’s easy to let our routines and goals slip a little. Right around the corner are colder days, darker nights, and plenty of holiday food! But that got me thinking that fall is actually a good time to get back into a routine. Summer vacations are over, the weather is cooling off, and our schedules might finally feel a little more predictable.

Getting consistent now can make a difference when winter rolls around and it’s more about what you can do in the gym. Constantly varied fitness for the win!

Carrying groceries, hauling holiday decorations out of storage, shoveling snow. It all takes some strength.

The squats, deadlifts, presses, and carries you do at Chaka help you handle those things. Building strength now helps you stay active when colder weather makes the couch a little more appealing.

Keep your endurance going. You know that feeling when something that used to leave you out of breath starts feeling manageable? That’s what we’re working toward. The running, rowing, biking and skiing built into our workouts all help build your endurance. You don’t have to be training for a race to benefit. Keeping up with your family or getting through a busy day without feeling wiped out counts, too.

Keep moving! When it’s cold outside and you’re spending more time sitting, it’s easy to feel stiff. Moving regularly helps. Squatting, lunging, reaching, and working through a comfortable range of motion give your body a reason to keep doing those things. You don’t need to touch your toes or love stretching. Just keep showing up and moving.

Get a routine before the holiday rush. It’s easy to say, “I’ll get back to it in January.” But you don’t have to put your fitness on hold until then. Maybe three classes a week works for you. Maybe two is more realistic. Maybe you’ve been away all summer and just need to book that first class back. Start with something you can keep doing. Some weeks will go as planned, and others won’t. Missing a class or having a busy week doesn’t mean you have to start over. Come back when you can.

Take it outside the gym. At Chaka, we want your workouts to help you do the things you enjoy. Enjoy the hike, travel, play with your kids or grandkids, or feel stronger going about your day. Fall is a good time to build that momentum. You don’t need a perfect schedule or a big goal. Start with your next class and give yourself something to build on through winter.

Every Gym Has a Personality

I’ve been around gyms long enough to realize something: gyms have personalities. You can walk into two gyms that have almost the exact same equipment, offer somewhat similar workouts, and charge similarly. They can feel completely different. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Some gyms are competitive. You

What Does “Fit” Actually Mean?

When people hear the word “fit,” I think a lot of them immediately picture someone who is lean, fast, strong, and looks athletic. But the older I get, the more I think being fit has a lot less to do with what you look like and a lot more to

People Don’t Care How Much You Know Until They Know How Much You Care

CrossFit requires certification because coaches need a basic understanding of CrossFit’s methodology, movements, scaling, safety, and coaching standards. But certification is only one part of coaching. The rest is the responsibility of the affiliate and the coach themselves. I believe in the CrossFit methodology. I think coaches should understand it,

The Advice I Wish I Had When I Started CrossFit

I know this is not the first time I have said it, but CrossFit is a challenge. It is. I know I sound like a broken record, but I’ll repeat myself anyway. I try not to use the word “hard” too often because I never want that word to scare
